“The Land of the Midnight Sun?
Bob’s Welding & Heavy Equipment Ltd. was founded and formed in 1979 by Bob Gully of Inuvik whom still actively works as President of the company. He continues to work long days and says his success comes from hard honest work and a positive attitude.
Born in Aklavik and raised in the delta, Bob grew up with the Town of Inuvik being constructed. He left school very early and began working at the age of 14, and then in 1958 had the opportunity to train in Leduc, Alberta as a Heavy Equipment Operator and Mechanics. After a few months he worked as an apprentice Diesel Mechanic with NCPC, then in the late 1960’s he took a course in Auto Mechanics.
In 1979 he started his own business under the name Bob’s Welding and his children and family members have helped in the business throughout the years. Two of his son’s, grew up involved in the business with Brian working in Heavy Equipment Mechanics and Lyle doing welding. Lyle mainly focuses now on his responsibilities as the Vice-President of the company.
Many other family members, including grandchildren are also involved from managing the office or out in the field learning different areas and tasks of the company or working as class one drivers and Heavy equipment operators.
The business has apprenticed many mechanics and welders including one female welder from Inuvik and Bob says that there is a shortage of workers in this field.
The Business became incorporated in 1983 and has grown into one of the largest local aboriginal businesses in Inuvik and within the region. The business has grown and expanded over the years by gradually building and adding more services, equipment and resources and taking on larger contracts and projects locally, at camps, worksites, and communities in the region.
In the 30 years of operation, the business has expanded from a one man, mechanical and welding service, to Heavy Equipment Operations servicing with a fleet of Winch Tractors, Gravel Trucks, Cats, Loaders, Excavators, Cranes, Rock Drills, Packers, Plows as well as two complete Rock Crusher spreads, three Tugs and Barges, two Garages and a large office located on Navy Road.
Services that were gradually added to the business were, water delivery & vacuum service, rock blasting, rock crushing, oxygen & acetylene sales, Garbage pick-up, marine transport, Supply of Camp Trailers, and two carwash stations. We also have a full service gas station, as well as heating fuel delivery service in Inuvik, Tuktoyaktuk and Aklavik.
Throughout the year, we employ up to 30 regular employees and increases based on new work projects.
Bob, when he makes spare time, still enjoys time on the land in the Delta or traveling south on the dempster highway always looking and thinking of new ideas and ventures.
